What Is PV + ESS + X? A Guide to Integrated Energy System Design

PV + ESS + X is a system-integration approach. It considers generation, storage, loads and other energy assets together, with controls that reflect the application’s operating priorities.

Start with the application

The “X” may include a factory load, EV charging, cooling or heating equipment, telecom infrastructure or another application-specific asset. The system architecture should follow the site need.

  • Identify assets and critical loads
  • Clarify grid-connected and backup operating requirements

Define the energy flows

PV, storage, grid and loads can exchange energy in different ways. A clear control strategy helps determine when the battery should charge, discharge or remain in reserve.

  • PV priority and self-consumption
  • Peak shaving, reserve and tariff response

Coordinate through system controls

BMS, EMS, inverters or PCS, meters and cloud monitoring each have a role in a coordinated energy system. Interface design and commissioning are essential project steps.

  • Communications and data requirements
  • Operating strategy and acceptance testing
